Heritage Home in Shimla

The beautiful shooting star room has a ‘Dhajji wall’ which goes with the whole vintage theme…

Seclude Taraview is a heritage property that has passed the test of time. A gentle slope leads down to the reception where you can soak in the rich history of this property. Four rooms, each with its own distinct character, line the first floor. These rooms face an enchanting glazed veranda with the perfect setting to enjoy the Shimla skyline. Just a few steps below, a charming open veranda leads into the classic dining room, lined with two luxurious rooms on the side. Opposite the open veranda, two regal lion statues guard the flourishing outdoors. The lush green gardens beside the dining are the ideal spot to enjoy some masala chai or just take in the fresh mountain air. After over 150 years, this majestic bungalow has finally opened its doors to curious guests.
A: Old Shimla has a very different pace from the busier parts of town — quieter roads, heritage homes, tall deodars, and long valley views. That’s where Taraview sits. Chandigarh Airport is the nearest major airport, around 3.5–4 hours away by road depending on traffic and weather. Kalka is the closest major railway station, from where the drive into Shimla takes about 2.5–3 hours.

✦ Reach before sunset if you can — Taraview makes a very good first impression in evening light.
A: Six rooms, all inspired by the galaxy — Cosmos, Milky Way, Nebula, Shooting Star, Sunbeam, and Super Moon.
A few guests ask specifically for Super Moon, the master bedroom with large glass windows and open sunset views, and Sunbeam, which carries more of the home’s old-world character through its vintage-style detailing and warm wooden interiors. Milky Way and Nebula feel brighter and more open through the day, while Cosmos and Shooting Star are slightly quieter and more tucked away.
All six rooms sit inside a 150-year-old heritage home, so high ceilings, old woodwork, and slightly imperfect corners are very much part of the experience.
✦ No two rooms feel the same here — which is exactly why guests tend to remember the room they stayed in.
A: Shimla is best known for its colonial architecture, old churches, toy-train history, café culture, and long walks through cedar-lined roads that somehow make you slow down without noticing.
Taraview works well as a quieter base to experience all of that. Mall Road, Jakhoo Temple, Christ Church, and Kufri are all easily accessible from the property. Closer home, most guests end up spending time in the glazed verandah, the gardens, or simply watching the skyline change through the evening.
And on clear nights, the sky opens up properly here — which explains the galaxy-inspired rooms better than any design brief could.
✦ With its open skyline and minimal city light around, Taraview is especially loved for clear stargazing nights.
A: Mostly the kind that suit Shimla best. A special comforting Himachali Dham, stargazing, picnics, and the verandah makes for a quiet reading corner you accidentally spend hours in.
If you want to step out, the team can help with local recommendations around cafés, heritage walks, nearby viewpoints, and day excursions around Shimla and Kufri.
✦ The glazed verandah tends to become everyone’s favourite spot.

A: Classic hill-station comfort food done right.
Expect a mix of Indian favourites, a special Himachali Dham lunch, simple continental dishes, warm desserts, and meals that feel especially good after a cold evening outdoors.
✦ Order chai once the temperature drops in the evening, the gardens somehow feel even better after that!
A: Because very little about it feels manufactured. Taraview is a 150-year-old heritage home that still carries the personality of a lived-in space — not a hotel trying to imitate one.
The rooms are all different. The verandah genuinely frames the Shimla skyline beautifully. The gardens are made for long afternoons. And the overall experience feels quieter, older, and more personal than most stays in town.
✦ Taraview is at its best when you stop treating Shimla like a checklist and simply settle into the hills for a few days.
